LaSalle Parish Schools earn top-10 state ranking in early literacy achievement

LaSalle Parish Schools is celebrating significant gains in early literacy after new statewide results showed the district ranked among Louisiana’s top-performing school systems in reading proficiency for young learners.

According to district officials, 74 percent of Kindergarten through third-grade students were reading on or above grade level by the end of the school year, earning LaSalle Parish Schools the distinction of ranking eighth in Louisiana among 71 reporting school districts.

Education leaders say the achievement reflects the collective efforts of students, teachers, administrators, support staff, and families working together to strengthen literacy skills across the parish.

“Reading is the foundation for all future academic success,” district officials noted while recognizing the accomplishments of both students and educators.

One of the most notable successes came at the Kindergarten level, where students demonstrated remarkable growth throughout the school year. At the beginning of the year, just 50.3 percent of Kindergarten students were reading on or above grade level. By year’s end, that figure had increased to 83.8 percent, representing a substantial improvement in literacy readiness among the district’s youngest learners.

School officials attribute the gains to focused instruction, early intervention strategies, ongoing progress monitoring, and the dedication of classroom teachers who work daily to build strong literacy foundations.

The results are based on student performance on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment, a nationally recognized tool used to evaluate foundational reading abilities. The assessment is administered three times during the school year and measures critical literacy skills including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and reading accuracy.

Educators use DIBELS data to identify students who may need additional support and to ensure all students are progressing toward becoming confident and successful readers.

District leaders emphasized that literacy growth is not achieved by schools alone. They credited parents and families for supporting reading development at home and partnering with educators throughout the year.

The strong statewide ranking highlights the continued focus LaSalle Parish Schools has placed on early literacy, an area widely recognized as one of the most important predictors of future academic achievement.

As the district looks ahead to the upcoming school year, administrators say they remain committed to building on this success and ensuring every child has the opportunity to develop the reading skills necessary for lifelong learning.

School officials also extended their appreciation to teachers, principals, and school support teams whose commitment and dedication helped make the achievement possible.

“Our educators are making a difference every day,” the district stated. “Their work is helping ensure that every child has the opportunity to become a successful reader.”

The top-10 statewide ranking serves as a testament to the hard work taking place in classrooms across LaSalle Parish and reinforces the district’s commitment to student success from the earliest years of education.
