JENA, La. — The Jena Police Department is reminding residents about local roadway rules for golf carts and four-wheelers after receiving several questions about where the vehicles can legally be operated.

According to Jena Police, battery-operated golf carts must be registered through the department before being operated on designated city streets.

Police emphasized that registration does not allow golf carts to travel everywhere. Properly registered golf carts may be operated only on designated city streets and are not permitted on state highways.

The rules are different for gas-powered four-wheelers and ATVs. Those vehicles cannot be operated on roadways, according to the department.

“Just because it has four wheels doesn’t make it a golf cart,” Jena Police joked while explaining the distinction.

The department said the reminder is not intended to prevent residents from enjoying their recreational vehicles but to make sure operators understand the rules and avoid unnecessary encounters with law enforcement.

Residents planning to use a golf cart in Jena should make sure it is properly registered and confirm that their planned route remains on streets where golf cart operation is permitted.
