The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is offering outdoor enthusiasts an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of trapping through a hands-on educational workshop scheduled for Saturday, January 9, 2027, in Pineville.
The registration lottery opened November 1 for the upcoming Pineville Trapper Workshop, which will introduce participants to the skills, equipment, regulations and techniques involved in trapping Louisiana furbearers.
The workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the LDWF Pineville Office, located at 1995 Shreveport Highway in Pineville.
Participants will receive instruction on Louisiana trapping laws, regulations and safety practices, along with information about commonly used trapping equipment and tools.
The program will also feature outdoor trapping demonstrations, supervised opportunities to practice setting traps and instruction on proper skinning techniques.
Designed to provide practical experience, the workshop offers both beginners and those interested in expanding their outdoor skills an opportunity to learn directly through demonstrations and hands-on activities.
The event is open to participants of all ages, although LDWF recommends the workshop primarily for adults and children ages 12 and older. Participants younger than 18 must attend with a responsible adult, and younger children must remain under close adult supervision.
Enrollment is limited to 20 participants, and interested individuals must enter a registration lottery for the opportunity to attend. One family member or friend may accompany a successful applicant. Families and friends may also enter the lottery as a group in hopes of attending together, subject to available space.
Lunch will be provided during the workshop.
The training is part of LDWF’s efforts to promote responsible outdoor recreation and educate residents about Louisiana’s wildlife resources and trapping practices.
Those interested in participating can enter the registration lottery online at Louisiana Outdoors Lottery Applications.
For additional information or questions about the workshop, contact Tanya Sturman with LDWF at tsturman@wlf.la.gov.
With limited enrollment, interested participants are encouraged to submit their lottery applications for a chance to take part in the January workshop.
