The Jena Police Department is reminding drivers to remain vigilant and obey school bus traffic laws designed to protect students during daily pick-up and drop-off times.
Chief Scott McLendon and the department emphasized that Louisiana law requires all motorists to come to a complete stop when a school bus is loading or unloading children.
Officials say when a school bus has its stop arm extended and red warning lights flashing, traffic in all directions is required to stop, regardless of which direction vehicles are traveling.
Police noted that these laws are intended to create a safe environment for children as they enter and exit school buses each day.
Failing to stop for a school bus not only places students at risk, but can also lead to significant fines and legal penalties for drivers who violate the law.
The department is encouraging all motorists to slow down, remain alert near school bus routes, and exercise extra caution during morning and afternoon school transportation hours.
“Let’s all do our part to keep our students safe,” the department stated in its public reminder.
Law enforcement officials say school bus safety remains a top priority and are asking the public to help prevent avoidable accidents by following all traffic laws around school transportation vehicles.
