The Jena Police Department is helping keep residents informed by sharing information about a door-to-door book salesperson who will be visiting neighborhoods in the area in the coming days.
According to a community notice issued by Chief Scott McLendon, a woman known as “Shelvy” or “The Book Lady” recently contacted the department to advise officers that she would be traveling throughout the community selling books.
Police officials described the woman as courteous and proactive, noting that she wanted both law enforcement and residents to be aware of her presence while conducting sales activities in the area.
The department reported that Shelvy is driving a silver Toyota Camry displaying California license plates.
While the department emphasized that the sales activity appears legitimate, officials are reminding residents to exercise caution and personal discretion whenever answering their doors or interacting with unfamiliar individuals.
Authorities also stressed that residents are under no obligation to make a purchase or engage in any sales transaction if they choose not to do so.
As part of its ongoing commitment to community awareness and public safety, the Jena Police Department encourages residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that may arise.
Anyone with concerns or who observes suspicious behavior is asked to contact the Jena Police Department at 318-992-5111.
Officials say sharing information such as this helps keep residents informed while promoting transparency and communication between law enforcement and the community.
The department thanked residents for their continued cooperation and assistance in helping maintain a safe and informed community throughout LaSalle Parish.
